Gazprom Neft increases environmentally friendly marine bunkering on the Northern Sea Route

Gazprom Neft is to increase environmentally friendly marine bunkering volumes for Norilsk Nickel’s Arctic fleet by a further 30%, to 80,000 tonnes per year, with Gazpromneft Marine Bunker, operator of Gazprom Neft’s bunkering business, set to provide refuelling services for this mining and metallurgical company’s container ships, tankers and icebreakers operating on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) throughout 2022.

Norilsk Nickel’s Arctic fleet numbers around 20 vessels, operating, among other things, on the “Northern Supply Haul” — i.e., delivering government supplies of essential resources to North—West Russia and the Russian Far East.

Production and blending of environmentally friendly fuels (with a sulphur content of less than 0.5%) is undertaken at Gazprom Neft’s Moscow and Omsk Refineries, and at Gazpromneft-Marine Bunker’s fuel terminals in St Petersburg and Novorossiysk.

«A cutting-edge production base, together with developed infrastructure throughout northern ports, means we can ensure uninterrupted fuel deliveries, at guaranteed high quality. At the same time though, the fragile ecosystem of the North demands careful treatment, which is why our supplies are based on 0.5% ultra-low sulphur marine fuels, using which can significantly reduce the carbon footprint involved in transportation on the Northern Sea Route».

Decarbonising maritime transportation on the NSR is a key strategic priority for Gazpromneft Marine Bunker, with the company providing year-round environmentally friendly bunkering services to Arctic vessels operating at the ports of Murmansk and Archangelsk, as well as those operating on the NSR.
