ABA Conference in Atlanta Features EPA Speakers on Key Environmental Issues in U.S. Southeastern States

WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 21, 2013 — The American Bar Association Conference on Key Environmental Issues in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 4, presented by the Section of Environment, Energy and Resources on Feb. 26 in Atlanta, will focus on environmental law program initiatives and priorities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Specifically, the conference will address crucial developments in water and air regulation; administration of federal laws designed to clean up sites contaminated with hazardous substances; and developments in brownfields, natural resources and environmental law enforcement. Speakers include representatives from the EPA, U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of the Solicitor and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

Program highlights include:

“Mineral Resource Extraction Issues Are Not Just for Energy Practitioners” — This panel will address the environmental issues of U.S. domestic energy supplies, including the regulation of hydraulic fracturing, EPA’s regulation of coal combustion residuals, and coal mining in Appalachia. 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

“Redevelopment, Reuse and Sustainability” — This panel will explore topics related to sustainability and redevelopment, including an overview of recent brownfield developments in the states in EPA Region 4; what types of biomass energy qualify as renewable under Green-e’s Standard; and recent changes in the vapor intrusion practice area. 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

“It’s Not Just a Bunch of Hot Air: Key Clean Air Topics for Region 4” — Panelists — including Maya Rao, chief of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality Air Division’s Office of Pollution Control, and Kristi M. Smith with the EPA — will address the cross-state air pollution rule implications for practitioners in Region 4, the state of greenhouse gas regulations from EPA, and emerging air toxics issues for state regulators. 1:30 – 2:45 p.m.

“Hot Topics in Regional Water Issues” — Jim Giattina, director of EPA’s Region 4 Water Protection Division, will be among the panelists to look at the emerging regulatory environment for nutrient impacts on water quality, including water quantity regulation and the future of EPA’s jurisdiction over wetlands. 3 – 4:15 p.m.
