WCMU Public Television’s “Destination Michigan” received a regional Emmy Award from The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Michigan Chapter on June 16.

Accepting the Emmy were crew members Steven Smith, Stefanie Mills, Adam Miedema, Chris Ogozaly and Matthew Ozanich.

“Destination Michigan" is an original WCMU Public Television series that explores Michigan and showcases some of the people and places that make the state unique. Earlier this year, the show received the Broadcast Excellence Award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

Although the show is now in its ninth season, the Emmy-winning episode is from the eighth season. It features stories about the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, great lakes photographer Neil Weaver and a pirate ship that sails the Straits of Mackinac.

When asked why he thinks the show deserved an Emmy, segment producer Steven Smith said it was because of the people who have been featured on "Destination Michigan" episodes.

"It all goes back to the hundreds of people who we've covered in our show over the years. It's their stories that have made our show so intriguing and interesting," Smith said. "We're extremely happy this recognition has come our way."
